“I think that model may work for Kylie or whoever else bases their career on vanity or some kind of superficial thing. “My biggest nightmare would be if somebody came to Sephora, saw my brand, and said, ‘Oh, I want to look like her, so I’ll buy this makeup,’” Kat Von D proclaimed to an audience of beauty world professionals at the WWD Beauty Summit this summer, her first-ever appearance at a major industry event. But she doesn’t want an army of Kat clones. Jet-black hair, red lipstick, and predilection for mismatched eye makeup have become her signatures. It’s a combination of punk, goth, and good old-fashioned rock ’n’ roll, featuring lots of black (and lately, head-to-toe red) outfits in faux leather and kooky avant-garde shapes. Like Kylie, Kat has an instantly recognizable, highly-stylized aesthetic. Today, Kat Von D Beauty is one of Sephora’s most successful brands, with products that sell out in a matter of weeks and rack up tens of thousands of glowing reviews and live events that attract hundreds of fans. Nearly a decade ago, the tattoo artist famous for a career in reality television and a string of tabloid-fodder relationships took her notoriety and turned it into a global beauty empire. What book have you read more than once? “Bram Stoker’s Dracula. You know how people put up embarrassing pictures of friends? All of mine would be like, I was the coolest kid! I had a Mohawk when I was 14, and I did not give a f-k! Kind of like how I am today.” What is your biggest fashion regret? “None! I don’t regret anything, even the bad stuff.
What part of your day do you dread the most? “Going through airport security.” If you had to change jobs tomorrow, what would you do? “Possibly kill myself. What quality or talent do you envy in others? “People who are hopeful in love.” Yeah, he’s the first punk-rock musician, in my opinion.” Since Beethoven, there has never been anybody who has come close to that. When you listen to the Fifth Symphony, there’s a certain magic behind it. He was able to tap into his creative abilities, despite not being able to actually hear music.
I think he’s the true meaning of what heroes are made of-going against the grain, and being ahead of his time. Who do you most admire and why? “Beethoven. I’ve played classical music since I was 5 years old.” But I think the perfect lazy Sunday would involve no telephone, and a piano. How would you fritter away a lazy Sunday? “I don’t know what it’s like to have the time to do that. What is the one food you absolutely refuse to eat? “Mushrooms. How would you describe your default mood? “Despondent and hopeful.” With tongue-firmly-in-cheek, Von D gamely sat down to answer our FLARE Questionnaire: Look out for the 30 shades-both classic (fire engine red) and gutsy (iridescent lilac neon, matte lavender, shimmery navy)-on shelves in late July.
